Last month my mom and I went on an amazing adventure to beautiful and exotic Morocco. Of all the places we went to and the sites we were able to see, my favorite was Chefchaouen. Chaouen, as it is affectionately called, is the famous tiny blue town in Morocco’s Rif Mountains. It is simply beautiful. There were beautiful, radiant, and soft shades of blue everywhere, from front doors, to the walls of the entire medina, we were surrounded by a subtle tranquility and peacefulness.
We spent most of our time just wondering around the Medina, stopping to admire the scenery, talking with the locals, and shopping in the Souks at the main square.
The medina is a spectacular maze of tiny pathways, blue doors grommeted in steel, and the constant surprise of color and texture. It truly is a beautiful and peaceful sight to see! My favorite part were the fabulous doors, ordained with varying shades of blue and special features to signify the residents inside.
There aren’t a lot of sights in this little town, so if you’re looking for the hustle and bustle of a larger city this isn’t for you. What you do get, is a peaceful and beautiful glimpse of what life in Morocco is life. There are many wonderful Riad & Dar options for your stay. We stayed at the Lina Riad & Spa and it was a breathtaking oasis. From the relaxing and tranquil spa, to the soft white washed walls, to the vibrant blue lounge this little riad was truly spectacular. Or if you want to capture the amazing views, take the trek up to the rooftop terrace and bask into the beauty surrounding you.
The city is also a very popular shopping destination for many Europeans and over travelers as it offers many native handicrafts that are unique to the area. From leather goods, cedar wood boxes and furniture, to woven wool blankets and garments you can find some rare treasures for a fair price. Or simply digest the beautiful scenery from just outside the city or from the top of your riad.
